Kangaroo Island named as one of the New York Times top 10 travel destinations for 2023

Kangaroo Island has been included in the New York Times annual top 10 places to visit in the world this year.
The annual 52 Places to go list for 2023 includes Kangaroo Island in seventh place between Palm Springs, California, and Vjosa River, Albania.
It is a huge endorsement for the island, which was devastated by widespread bushfires during the summer of 2019-2020.
Writer Besha Rodell says Kangaroo Island is known for its "incredible wildlife, breathtaking ocean views and its status as an ecological haven - like a zoo without fences".
Ms Rodell says the island is now more compelling than ever to visit with the famous Southern Ocean Lodge to reopen "grander and better than before".
The only other Australian destination to feature in the list was Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which was ranked 29th.

5 Day Kangaroo Island Tour

Monday 9th September — Friday 13th September 2024

Kangaroo Island, because of its variety and abundance of wildlife, has often been described as a "zoo without fences". Kangaroo Island’s first official settlers arrived in July 1836 aboard the Duke of York. For the first free settlement in Australia, Kingscote was dogged by the lack of water and suitable building timber. After 4 years it was abandoned in favour of Adelaide. Today Kangaroo Island is one of Australia’s best known and loved holiday destinations. After suffering from serious summer fires the resilient tourism industry is up and running again and welcoming visitors to their special place. Most of the local infrastructure was spared. Unfortunately the Flinders Chase Visitors Centre was destroyed along with some properties at the western end of the Island but mostly KI is open for business and would welcome your visit.
